Add admins to your Valheim server

Do you want to allow other players to administer your Valheim server, use admin-only commands, or modify certain settings directly in-game?

No need to dig through server files: the adminlist.txt file can be edited directly from the Configuration tab in the nitroserv Manager!

Quick Answer

To add an admin to your Valheim server:

1. get the player's Platform User ID with F2 in-game;
2. stop your server;
3. open the Configuration tab in the nitroserv Manager;
4. add their ID in adminlist.txt, with one player per line;
5. click Save;
6. restart your server.

The Platform User ID is case-sensitive: it must be copied exactly as you see it, including uppercase and lowercase letters.

Step 1: Get the player's Player ID

Start by joining your Valheim server with the account you want to make an administrator. Once in-game, open the player panel with your F2 key.

Find your Platform User ID (also called Player ID) and copy it exactly as it appears: Valheim now uses this identifier rather than a simple SteamID64 to manage permissions on dedicated servers.

This allows the system to work with the different platforms supported by crossplay. The identifier follows the format [Platform]_[ID] and it is case-sensitive (uppercase and lowercase letters matter), so the safest approach is to copy it exactly as is.

If you don't feel like launching the game right now, but you've already played, Iron Gate also indicates that the Player ID can be found in the server logs!

Step 2: Open adminlist.txt in the nitroserv Manager

Stop your server, then open your nitroserv Manager.

Go to the Configuration tab: we've put direct access to the adminlist.txt file there.

No need for FileZilla, no file downloads, no obscure procedures: everything can be edited directly from the Manager!

Step 3: Add your admin

In adminlist.txt, add the player's Platform User ID on a new line.

If you want to add multiple administrators, simply use one line per player:

Platform_PlayerID1

Platform_PlayerID2

Platform_PlayerID3

Once done, click Save.

Step 4: Restart your server

Then restart your Valheim server to apply the change.

The Player ID(s) added to adminlist.txt now have administrator permissions when they join the server with the corresponding account!

What commands can a Valheim admin use?

Being added to adminlist.txt allows you to use functions and commands that require administrator rights: this is especially important if you want to modify world modifiers directly in-game, such as raids, resources, portals, or difficulty.

Be careful though: being an admin doesn't automatically unlock all of Valheim's cheat commands. Some commands like spawn, god, or debugmode don't work natively the same way on a dedicated server and may require a mod!

What about Xbox, PS5, or Switch 2?

The principle remains the same: Valheim has been using a Platform User ID for some years now, not just a SteamID. This is exactly the system used by dedicated servers to manage permissions in a crossplay environment.

For Xbox, our internal tests confirmed that an admin player could open the console in-game after enabling its display in settings and plugging in a keyboard, then use F5 to access commands compatible with dedicated servers.

With the release of Valheim 1.0, crossplay is now available between all platforms: PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and even Nintendo Switch 2!

Why doesn't my old SteamID64 work?

Old Valheim guides often only mention SteamID64.

Today, the official documentation requires a Platform User ID in the format [Platform]_[User ID] in adminlist.txt.

If you've added only a long string of numbers retrieved from a SteamID website and the permissions aren't working, get the identifier displayed directly with F2 in-game ☝️🤓 instead.

My account is in adminlist.txt but I'm still not an admin

Verify that:

• you've copied the complete Platform User ID;
• the uppercase and lowercase letters match;
• each player is on their own line;
• you've clicked Save;
• the server was restarted after the modification;
• you're joining the server with the same account whose ID you retrieved.

How do I remove an admin?

It's exactly the same process in reverse.

1. stop your server;
2. open Configuration;
3. delete the line corresponding to the player in adminlist.txt;
4. click Save;
5. restart the server.

The player will obviously keep access to the server, but no longer have administrator permissions.
